  • A 5.7 M earthquake struck Shimane prefecture in Chugoku region of Honshu, Japan, at a depth of 10 km on 6 January at 01:18 UTC (10:18 local time). The epicentre was located 18 km south of Matsue, the capital of Shimane prefecture.
  • USGS PAGER estimates 20 000 people exposed to very strong shaking and up to 403 000 people exposed to strong shaking.
  • The Japanese Fire and Disaster Management Agency (FDMA), as of 7 January, reports that seven people were injured, of which two seriously injured in Shimane prefecture and five with minor injuries across Shimane, Tottori, and Okayama prefectures. Additionally, five houses have been partially damaged.
  • Media, as of 6 January, further reports damage to several houses and cracks on the roads of Tottori prefecture.
