  • An earthquake of? 4.5 M at a depth of?4?km occurred on?4?March at?6.05?UTC (7.05?local time), as recorded by the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) in eastern Sicily, southern Italy. The epicentre was located?3?km?north-west of the town of Ragalna and?22?km?south-east of the city of Catania.
  • According to the Civil Protection of the Sicily region, the event was felt in more than?20?municipalities near the epicentre. As a precautionary measure, schools were closed on?4?March in the municipalities of Adrano, Aci?Sant’Antonio, Biancavilla, Belpasso, Gravina di Catania, San?Giovanni?la?Punta, San?Pietro?Clarenza, Santa?Maria?di?Licodia, Mascalucia and Catania. The same source reports numerous roof damages, with widespread collapses in the marginal sections of dry-stone walls and ruins.
  • On the same day, at?12.12?UTC, Etna volcano experienced an impulsive explosive event that lasted a few minutes and involved the summit crater known as?Bocca?Nuova. The explosion generated an ash plume that rose to a height of?1.5?km, producing a light ash fall on the upper slopes of the volcano. The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) reports that there are no elements indicating a correlation between this explosive event and the ?4.5 M earthquake.
