  • An earthquake of 5.4 M at a depth of 8 km occurred in central North Island (northern New Zealand) on 30 November at 10.48 UTC (23.48 local time). The epicentre was located in the lake Taupo, approximately 20 km south-west of the lakeside town of Taupo (southern Waikato Region) and 235 km south-east of Auckland City.
  • USGS PAGER estimates that up to 23,000 people were exposed to strong and 8,000 to moderate shaking.
  • The earthquake was followed by two main aftershocks of 4.5 M and 4.1 M (at a depth of 10 km) occurred in the lake nearby the epicentre of the main event.
  • Media report that a series of minor water surges reached the coast of Taupo and that the earthquake was felt also in the cities of New Plymouth, Napier, Hamilton, and Tauranga. As of 1 December, there were no immediate reports of casualties and damage.
