  • A 6.3 M earthquake at a depth of 26 km occurred on 17 April at 14.14 UTC (23.14 local time) offshore close to the south-western coast of Shikoku Island in southern Japan. The epicentre was located approximately 17 km west-south-west of Uwajima City (Ehime Prefecture).
  • According to USGS PAGER, up to 1,000 people were exposed to very strong shaking and 156,000 to strong shaking. 
  • According to the Fire and Disaster Management Agency (FDMA), six people have been injured, of whom six in Ehime Prefecture (Shikoku Island), two in Oita Prefecture (Kyushu Island), and one in Kochi Prefecture (Shikoku Island).
