  • Heavy rainfall has been affecting most of Burundi over the last month, causing floods, landslides, rivers overflow and a significant rise in the water level of Lake Tanganyika, causing population displacement and widespread damage. The most affected areas are the western provinces of Bujumbura Mairie (where the capital Bujumbura is the most affected), Rumonge, Makamba and Cibitoke.
  • The IFRC and media report, as of 19 April, approximately 100,000 displaced people, around 162,350 affected people and nearly 1,350 flooded houses in ten communes across the four abovementioned provinces. In addition, according to the IFRC, the port of Rumonge is reported to be flooded, and the port of Bujumbura as partially flooded.
  • On 13 April, Burundi authorities requested assistance via the EU Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM) in the form of technical expertise to assess the situation and make recommendations on response actions. The Emergency Response Coordination Centre (ERCC) has deployed three experts (nominated by Germany) in water and flood management together with an ERCC Liaison Officer.
  • Over the next 72 hours, more heavy rainfall with locally very heavy rainfall is forecasted over the whole country.
Rumonge Province, Burundi, Late April 2024A massive landslide struck in Muhuta district in the province of Rumonge, Burundi on 19 April 2024. One person died and 2,485 people were displaced. As many as 497 houses were destroyed, along with a hydropower dam in Gitaza zone. Over 500 hectares of crop fields were also destroyed. Local officials said part of the mountainside crashed into the Kirasa River, completely damaging the Kirasa hydropower dam that provides electricity to the town of Mutumba.Sun 21 Apr 2024FloodList provided by Copernicus GLOFAS
