On 11 October, a 5.7 magnitude earthquake hit northern Ethiopia, causing damage to homes and public infrastructure across both Afar and Tigray regions.
In Berhale district (Afar), the earthquake reportedly killed one 12-year-old child and injured nine people. More than 1,400 homes and 12 public facilities are reportedly damaged, including schools and health centers, as well as over 150 water sources, leaving families without access to water.
Overall, an estimated 43,000 people across five villages are affected and in need of assistance, according to local authorities. UN OCHA is planning to join a verification team dispatched to the area on 15 October.
Similarly, the earthquake that struck Tigray impacted several areas, including the regional capital, Mekelle. According to Disaster Risk Management Office officials, the earthquake damaged 40 houses and fully destroyed five, affecting around 225 people.
Aftershocks have been reported, increasing the risk to already compromised structures and heightening community vulnerability. The DG ECHO co-funded Ethiopia Rapid Response Mechanism has been activated to respond to emergency needs.
