Portugal - Severe weather, update (ECHO 01 Feb 2026)
Pubdate: 1/30/2026 11:16:47 AM
  • Since January 27, storm Kristin has brought heavy rainfall, flooding, and strong winds to Portugal, causing fatalities and widespread damage. The worst-affected districts include Lisbon, Leiria, Coimbra, Castelo Branco, Portalegre, Santarém, Setúbal, and Guarda.
  • As of January 29, authorities confirmed five deaths: three in Leiria (Centro region), one in Vila Franca de Xira (Lisbon), and one in Silves (Algarve). Several people were displaced, infrastructure damaged (including stadiums, roofs, and aircraft in Coimbra), railway lines and major roads disrupted. Majority of the schools on the most affected areas were shut and the communications are still down in some parts of the Centro region.
  • The Copernicus Emergency Management Service (EMS) was activated on January 28 (EMSR861) for Spain and Portugal.
  • Moderate rainfall is forecast for the next three days. Some of the major rivers are likely to overflow, resulting in flooding in several towns.
  • Red coastal alerts remain for northwestern Portugal (January 30-31), with the rest of the coastline under orange warnings. By February 1, coastal alerts have been downgraded to yellow.
