Italy - Landslide, update (ECHO 01 Feb 2026)

  • On 25 January 2026 around 12 UTC, a very huge landslide triggered by heavy rainfall occurred in the town of Niscemi (Caltanissetta province, southern Sicily island). As of 30 January, the landslide is still moving. The landslide mass reached approximately 350 million cubic metres.
  • The Italian Civil Protection reports, as of 30 January, 1210 people have been evacuated as preventive measure according to the update of 29 January evening. In addition, a number of schools remain closed and Niscemi's mayor informed that alternative solutions are ongoing. Moreover, the risk area was extended up to around 25 square kilometres (with a complete building ban inside).
  • Over the next 48 hours, light rainfall is forecast over the western Sicily island with a peak expected on Saturday, while moderate to heavy rainfall is still forecast over the whole island on 1 February.
