USA - Wildfires (ECHO 22 Feb 2026)
Pubdate:

Since 17 February, three major wildfires have been burning across Oklahoma in the south-central United States, forcing evacuations and causing significant damage.
Wildfires are also affecting other States such as Texas, Arkansas, Kansas and New Mexico.
The wildfires in Oklahoma have burned more than 122 000 hectares and destroyed over 400 homes. A combination of high temperatures, low humidity and strong winds exceeding 100 km/h has fuelled the spread of the wildfires.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) confirms evacuations of 771 people from Beaver county, 2 000 from Woodward county and 400 from areas affected by the Texas/Beaver county fire, with media reports indicating four injuries in Beaver county and the destruction of several buildings.
The Joint Research Centre (JRC) Global Wildfire Information System (GWIS) forecasts high to extreme fire danger in Oklahoma over the next 24 hours, decreasing to moderate to high by 21 February.
