Indonesia - Earthquake (ECHO 05 Apr 2026)

  • A strong offshore earthquake of magnitude?7.4?M at a depth of 35?kilometres occurred in the northern Molucca Sea, between the islands of Sulawesi and Halmahera, on?1?April at?22:48?UTC (07:48 local time). The epicentre was located?126?km west-north-west of Ternate City, Ternate Island, North?Maluku Province.
  • At least?18?aftershocks have been recorded in the area, with magnitudes ranging from?4.4?M to?6.2?M.
  • USGS?PAGER estimates that about?209?000?people were exposed to strong shaking and?2.1?million to moderate shaking.
  • According to the National Agency for Disaster Countermeasure (BNPB), one person died and one got injured as a result of the event in Manado City, North?Sulawesi province. A small damage was reported in Pulau?Batang?Dua District, Ternate City and in South?Ternate District. The cities that felt the seismic event most strongly were Bitung City and the Ternate City area.
  • BMKG issued and later lifted a tsunami warning, although the earthquake generated small tsunami waves recorded at several localities, including West?Halmahera (0.3?m), Bitung (0.2?m), Sidangoli (0.35?m), North?Minahasa (0.75?m) and Belang (0.68?m).
  • Indonesian authorities are leading response through BMKG/BNPB/local authorities, focusing on evacuations, coastal warnings and rapid damage assessment. No major humanitarian needs are reported at this stage.
