India - Severe weather and floods, update (ECHO 23 May 2026)

Heavy rainfall, strong winds, heavy hailstorms, thunderstorms and lightning have been affecting several states of India over the past few days, causing several severe weather-related incidents and floods that have resulted in casualties and damage.
In Uttar Pradesh, the National Emergency Response Centre (NDMI) reports, as of 18 May, 122 fatalities due to floods and lightning since 13 May. In addition, NDMI reports nine fatalities in Maharashtra, three in Andhra Pradesh and one in each in Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. NDMI also reports a total of 16 injured people across the aforementioned affected states. Moreover, media also reports one fatality and approximately 23 600 affected people across the Assam state due to floods.
Over the next 48 hours, more rainfall with locally heavy rainfall is still forecast over most of north-eastern India and south-western India.
