  • Tropical Storm FRED, formed over the North Atlantic Ocean on 9 August, moving north-west over the Caribbean Sea and crossing Dominica. On 11 August at 2.00 UTC, its centre was 70 km south-southwest of Ponce City (southern Puerto Rico, USA), with maximum sustained winds of 65 km/h.
  • Fred will continue north-west, crossing Hispaniola late on 11 August before moving close to the Turks and Caicos Islands and south east of the Bahamas and Cuba on 12 August.
  • Heavy rain and strong winds are forecast over the Leeward Islands, Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Bahamas and Cuba. A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for Puerto Rico, including Culebra and Vieques, U.S. Virgin Islands, Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

  • Tropical Storm FRED has been crossing Hispaniola Island and on 11 August at 6.00 UTC, its centre was 15 km south of Port-de-Paix commune (northern Haiti), with maximum sustained winds of 56 km/h (tropical depression).
  • According to media reports, some 300,000 people were without power in the Dominican Republic.
  • FRED will move close to the Turks and Caicos Islands and the southeastern Bahamas late on 12 August before passing close or north of the northern coast of central Cuba on 12-13 August, and the Florida Keys and south Florida on 14 August, with maximum sustained winds up to 75 km/h.
  • Over the next 24 hours, heavy rainfall and strong winds are expected over the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Turks and Caicos, the Bahamas, and Cuba.

  • Tropical cyclone FRED has been moving north-west close to the northern coast of Cuba and on 13 August at 6.00 UTC, its centre was 80 km northeast of Puerto Padre Town (Las Tunas Province, central Cuba), with maximum sustained winds of 56 km/h (tropical depression).
  • National authorities of the Dominican Republic report 385 people displaced and 80 houses damaged or destroyed. Media report at least 400,000 people without power in the Dominican Republic and Haiti.
  • Fred is expected to continue moving north-west close to the eastern and central coast of Cuba on 13 August. On 14 August it will pass close to the Florida Keys and southern Florida, and the west coast of Florida on 15 August.
  • Over the next 24 hours, heavy rainfall and strong winds are expected over the Bahamas, Cuba, the Keys Islands and most of the Florida Peninsula.

  • Tropical Storm FRED is moving north-northwest in the Gulf of Mexico and on 16 August at 3.00 UTC, its centre was located about 265 km south-west of the coast of the Florida Panhandle (north-western Florida State), with maximum sustained winds of 83 km/h.
  • FRED is forecast to strengthen as it moves north and is expected to make landfall in coastal Walton County (western Florida Panhandle), early on 17 August, with maximum sustained winds up to 95 km/h before downgrading to a tropical depression, as it moves north over Alabama.
  • According to the US Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), a state of emergency has been declared for 23 Counties across Florida.
  • A storm surge and tropical storm warning have been issued for coastal areas in the Florida Panhandle. Moderate to heavy rainfall and strong winds are forecast over north-western Florida and eastern Alabama on 16-17 August.
