On 11 August (UTC), tropical cyclone ERIN formed over the North Atlantic Ocean and gaining strength, started moving west toward the northern Lesser Antilles and the Virgin islands. It reached maximum sustained winds of 259 km/h (category 5 hurricane) on 16 August over the Ocean. On 18 August (6.00 UTC), its centre was located offshore approximately 180 km east of the Turks and Caicos islands, with maximum sustained winds of 215 km/h (category 4 hurricane).
From 18-20 August, ERIN is forecast to continue moving north over the Ocean, far from the nearest countries (Turks and Caicos islands and the Bahamas). It is then forecast to pass approximately 600 km west of Bermuda on 21 August as a category 2 hurricane.
Over the next 24 hours, heavy rainfall, strong winds and storm surges are forecast over the Turks and Caicos islands, the Bahamas, the Virgin islands, Puerto Rico (USA) and the southern east coast of the USA. NOAA has issued a tropical storm warning for the Turks and Caicos islands and for the south-eastern Bahamas.
