Portugal - Severe weather and tropical cyclone GABRIELLE (ECHO 04 Oct 2025)Mon, 29 Sep 2025 10:06

  • The post-tropical cyclone GABRIELLE passed over the central Azores islands (Portugal) on 26 September in the morning (UTC), and its remnants reached southern Portugal and far south-western Spain on 28 September, causing heavy rainfall and strong winds that have resulted in population displacement and damage.
  • Media and the IFRC report, as of 29 September, 16 evacuated people in one emergency shelter and nearly 200 damaged structures in the Azores islands. In addition, media also report several school closures across the archipelago.
  • Over the next 12 hours, heavy rainfall is still forecast over most of Portugal and south-western Spain.
Spain - Severe weather (ECHO 05 Oct 2025)Tue, 30 Sep 2025 09:28

  • Post-tropical Cyclone GABRIELLE, which initially passed over the Azores Islands starting on 25 September, continued to affect eastern Spain from 28–29 September, bringing heavy rainfall and triggering severe flooding and the overflow of the La Saleta ravine in Aldaia (Valencia) and a river in Cuarte de Huerva (Zaragoza), resulting in extensive damage. Such channels have already returned to normal.
  • Flash floods occurred in coastal ravines, but were brief as the rains have not reached the first mountainous foothills where the longest ravines, such as the Poyo or Carraixet, originate. Above all, water accumulation has occurred mainly due to rainfall in urban areas.
  • No injuries were reported due to this incident, but several people were rescued from vehicles in Zaragoza. The storm caused widespread disruptions, including school closures in central Valencia and Catalonia, affecting 536,851 students across Valencia, Castellón, and Alicante.
  • Non-urgent health appointments were suspended, and transport was disrupted with rail and air delays, cancellations, and road closures  in the Valencian region, Catalonia, and Aragon. Power outages also occurred in Tarragona.
  • The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has issued an orange alert for continued heavy rain and thunderstorms over Valencia and the Balearic Islands on 30 September, though drier conditions are expected by 1 October.
