Tropical Cyclone Amphan, India and Bangladesh, May 2020On 16 May, a new Tropical Cyclone named "Amphan" formed over India Ocean and started moving north over the Bay of Bengal, toward north-east India coastal area and south of Bangladesh. By 19 May the influence of Amphan had already been felt with heavy rain reported in Odisha, India, and Feni in Bangladesh. After making landfall on 20 May, string winds caused widespread destruction in Odisha and West Bengal in India, and parts of Bangladesh. As of 22 May, 77 deaths in India and 25 in Bangladesh had been reported. Heavy rain caused flash flooding in West Bengal, India, including Kolkata Airport. Heavy rain and storm surge caused flooding in parts of Bangladesh including Bagerhat, where an embankment collapsed, and Cox's Bazar where rain caused landslides damaging shelters in relief camps. Heavy rain in the wake of Amphan caused flooding in Assam from 22 May and a landslide in Sikkim on 24 May (both reported separately).Tue 19 May 2020FloodList provided by Copernicus GLOFAS
