Vanuatu, New Caledonia - Tropical Storm GINA Fri, 20 May 2022 08:18

  • Tropical Storm GINA passed over the islands of Malampa and Shefa Provinces (central Vanuatu) on 19 May and is moving southwest towards New Caledonia. On 20 May at 0.00 UTC, its centre was located over the Coral Sea about 265 km north of Lifou Island (Loyalty Islands Province, New Caledonia), with maximum sustained winds of 65 km/h (tropical storm).
  • According to media reports, people living in Port Vila City close to the Prima River have been evacuated due to its overflow. In addition, schools have been closed in Port Vila, and the International Airport of Bauerfield has been flooded.
  • GINA is forecast to continue moving southwest, gradually downgrading, and it will approach the Loyalty Islands on 21-22 May.
  • For the next 48 hours, heavy rain and strong winds are forecast over the Loyalty Islands and central-southern Caledonia.
