  • Tropical Cyclone KIMI formed over the Coral Sea is moving along the eastern coast of Cape York Peninsula (northern Queensland). On 18 January, its centre was located approximately 100 km south-east of Cairns City, with maximum sustained winds of 102 km/h (tropical storm).
  • KIMI is forecast to move south, along the Cape York Peninsula, making landfall first over Magnetic Island, then over Townsville in the morning of 19 January, with maximum sustained winds up to 111 km/h (tropical storm).
  • Preemptive evacuation operations were carried for Fitzroy Island, while rescue teams have been deployed to Cairns and Townsville, ahead of the passage of Tropical Cyclone KIMI.
  • Red warnings for strong winds have been issued for areas from Innisfail to Ayr Municipalities, including Townsville. Heavy rainfall, and strong winds are forecast over northern Queensland on 18-19 January.
